The Process

For children and adults with additional needs, of all ages and levels of ability.

Our Music Therapy  programme includes the following steps:

Referrals can come from parents, GPs, teachers, psychologists, social workers, as well as from the client themselves. Referrals should focus on the emotional, social, communication and developmental needs of the client. Enjoyment of music or perceived musical ability on its own is not an adequate reason for a music therapy referral.

The assessment provides valuable information about the client's current level of functioning, strengths, needs and personal preferences. The purpose of the assessment is to determine the suitability of music therapy and to develop an appropriate programme that ultimately aims to support the client to optimally function in their daily lives and enjoy a better quality of life.

Initially and as part of the assessment, the parent/caretaker/referrer meets the music therapist to discuss the client’s case (Intake). The following two meetings involve music therapy assessment sessions with the client in the therapy room.

Upon completion of the assessment, the music therapist identifies the client's needs and potentials and designs a music therapy intervention plan, working towards specific goals and objectives.  Our therapists consult and, where applicable, work alongside with the multi-disciplinary team (e.g. psychologist, medical staff, physiotherapist, teacher, social worker, Speech & Language therapist, occupational therapist) to ensure that the client's needs are being addressed in the most effective way, helping them work towards their specific goals (e.g. to enhance verbal communication, reduce anxiety, help with the bereaving process).

Music Therapy sessions can be facilitated on an individual or group basis. Appropriate methods and techniques are used to support the development of the therapeutic relationship between client and the therapist, with the ultimate goal to help the person achieve greater well being and independence in their daily lives.

The music therapist monitors the client's progress on a weekly basis.

At this meeting, the parent/carer/team meets the therapist again for an evaluation of the Music Therapy programme and discuss recommendations for the future.  The music therapist also provides a written report of the overall  programme outline.
